Thank you for taking the time to read about my life's work and passion. I consider an invitation to a birth to be a humble privilege and try my very hardest to be the best support person I can be, honoring each family's unique birth wishes.
I've always enjoyed working with people. Even as a young child, I knew my passion included serving people when they needed it most. I've had opportunities to be a part of organizations and missions that have allowed me to serve throughout the US and worldwide, shaping who I've become. But, it wasn't until I became pregnant with my first child, that I realized my calling to be a doula. I, too, hired a doula and experienced first hand the benefit of having an advocate and rich resource during my birth journey. My husband and I now have had three children, each birth being uniquely powerful experiences in my life.
I am doula trained and certified through toLabor, an organization I whole-heartedly believe empowers doulas to be the most equipped to help families through birth. I've attended hundreds of births as a doula and have been working in a full-time, solo practice since 2009. In the past, I've taught natural childbirth education classes and workshops at both NOVA Natural Birth Center and Beloved Yoga. I've also enjoyed serving on the board of JustBirth, a local birth advocacy non-profit. Current and past memberships include many different perinatal organizations, such as Birth Matters VA, La Leche League, ICEA (International Childbirth Education Association), and The Virginia Breastfeeding Task Force. In 2011, I co-founded the Healthy Mothers Healthy Birth Initiative, a multi-disciplinary team focused on reducing the US maternal mortality rate. Other trainings and conferences include Neonatal Resuscitation with Karen Strange, CPR certification, A Day with Penny Simkin (doula, author, PT), HMHB with Ina May Gaskin, and an intensive Newborn Breastfeeding seminar with JM Birth Consultants (Marilyn Hildreth, RN, IBCLC). In recent years, I helped found, and continue to admin, Loudoun Birth Circle, which is a healthy-sized, monthly gathering of women and birth workers aimed in supporting each other throughout the childbearing years.
I am knowledgable about birth, skilled in interpersonal relationships and experienced in supporting families as a doula. I'd love the opportunity to chat with you further about helping you in your upcoming birth.
